Traditionally grown in the Andes region, quinoa got popular in 1993 when NASA recommended it as food to be taken to missions to space.
Its price increased by 3 times until the 2013 peak, and is controversial:
✳️ farmers in Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador would have a better income
✳️ but local populations could no longer afford it
✳️ in the end economists agree that the boom happened too soon for Latin America populations to get a positive impact from it
💡Advice: if you want to eat healthy but don’t support economic and social imbalance, eat local as much as you can. Left on the photo is a Switzerland-grown quinoa!
